Wide of celebration STORYLINE The Chinese community in Peru celebrated the 150th anniversary of its settlement in Lima on Saturday. People dressed in traditional Chinese dragon costumes paraded through Capon street - the heart of Lima's Chinatown. Called the "Barrio Chino de Lima", Lima's Chinese neighbourhood is thought to be one of the two earliest Chinatowns in the western hemisphere, along with that of Havana in Cuba. Community Representative, Patricia Bon said Saturday's celebration was two-fold as the date coincided with the 156th anniversary of the start of Chinese immigration to Peru. Chinatowns in Latin America developed with the rise of Chinese immigration in the 19th century. Chinese people initially came to Latin America as contract labourers in the agricultural and fishing industries. Later on many became established in their new homeland and abandoned thoughts of returning to China. Breaking Alert - China Vows To Project Powers Beyond Asia, Military Official Cautioned The newly nominated chief of the US Pacific Command says there is no guarantee that the United States would win a future conflict with China. Admiral Philip Davidson made the remark in a written document submitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee he attended on Tuesday. Davidson suggested that the US military should promptly upgrade its weapons and equipment to counter China. He said the US Pacific Command only has about a quarter of the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance it needs in the area of responsibility. He stressed that the US military activities in the South China Sea must continue, saying China's forward military bases there appear complete and the country is now capable of controlling the sea in all scenarios short of war with the United States. ________________________________________________ COURTESY - VOA NEWS, DOD, NHK NEWS

POST ASEAN SUMMIT, INDIA IS READY TO PROJECT ITS NAVAL PRESENCE IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION India will complete 25 years of dialogue partnership with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN, a thriving economic bloc, next year. Trade with ASEAN nations is gathering momentum at over 76 billion annually and is expected to gather steam in the coming year. ASEAN is however, not just trading group, regional security is also an important aspect of the partnership. It is here that India needs to do so much more. ASEAN is looking for greater Indian maritime presence in the region. Here, India has been somewhat lax but under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is ready to do its part. The Indian Navy is now preparing to project its presence not just in the Indian Ocean, but beyond to the Pacific and the Gulf of Aden. The Navy is in the process of modernizing and adding to its fleet. ASEAN nations gain from trade with China but worried about its aggressive claims Though ASEAN has gained tremendously by trading with China, the smaller nations are increasingly worried about China’s overpowering presence in the region. China is not just an economic power but also a formidable military power now. Beijing has territorial disputes with Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei, and is ready to use its muscle power to get its way. This is making much of Asia nervous. Even countries that have no territorial disputes with China, are wary of conflicts which could disturb the free flow of goods in the Pacific. Trade flowing through the Asia Pacific sea lanes amounts to over five trillion dollars annually and is likely to increase in future. India and ASEAN Security ASEAN nations have been privately urging New Delhi to do so for several years. Delhi under the UPA did take a few steps, especially with Vietnam, but backed off from doing more. Moreover, the second term of the UPA government was spent on domestic firefighting with little time for anything else. Now, as India is in the process of building up its naval capabilities, it is also willing to play a much larger role in the region, nor is the NDA shy of having closer defence ties with the US. The signing of the logistics agreement is the first step towards a closer relationship. And more are in the works. In fact, it was during President George Bush’s tenure that Washington began thinking of promoting India to balance out China in the Asia-Pacific region. The Obama administration followed Bush in this. The Indian Navy today is much more active. India’s maritime diplomacy has taken off in a major way. Since last September, naval ships have visited 50 ports across Europe, Asia and Africa. Among the countries in Europe were UK, France, Italy, Spain, in West Asia and North Africa, it was Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Seychelles as well as Iran in the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia, UAE, China, Japan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Vietnam, Cambodia. India has also held bilateral exercises with 10 countries in the last year. What worries China most is India’s maritime cooperation with the US. India-US-Japan now conduct joint naval exercises. Japan. which was kept out after Chinese protests, will now be a permanent invitee. New Delhi is also keen to build defense ties with its ocean neighbors. The Prime Minister’s visit to Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka in July 2015 was part of that effort. India also sold a war ship, Barracudda, to Seychelles in 2014. While the UPA government was over cautious in asserting India’s maritime presence, the Modi government is ready to take on a greater responsibility for itself in the neighborhood. Asian nations have privately been asking India to be a part of the future defense architecture of the Asia-Pacific region. While agreeing in principle, the UPA had not got down to acting on its commitments. With Modi it is clear that India will want to play a larger role, not just in its vicinity but beyond. China Uneasy About India-US Defense Cooperation China’s concern is that India is closing ranks with not just Japan but the US, which under President Barack Obama had already announced its pivot to Asia policy. When Barack Obama visited India in 2015, India and US had put out a joint statement on the freedom of navigation and the need to resolve disputes in the South China Sea by talks, keeping in mind the UN convention on the freedom of navigation. Since then, India has been regularly speaking out on the need for all nations to abide by international conventions. The security situation has also changed in India’s neighborhood. Ties between India and Pakistan has dipped to a new low since the Pathankot attack brought peace moves to a halt. China, which for a brief period, adopted a neutral position on India-Pakistan issues, has now gone back to the old days. Male elephants will experience ‘musth’ … a seasonal hormonal change where their testosterone levels can jump 60 times higher than normal. Meanwhile, solitary rogue elephants are are known to make unprovoked attacks on passersby. In one village, a rogue bull killed 27 people over a six-month period. #6 Bull Shark Larger specimens can measure some 11 feet long and weigh close to 700 pounds, , they can survive in freshwater or saltwater environments. Known for their aggressive nature, they tend to favor shallow coastal waters … which can lead to interactions with humans. In India, they’ve been known to navigate up the Ganges River and attack bathers there. Because they are known to favor populated locations, have little tolerance for provocation, and have a territorial nature, some experts say this animal might pose the biggest threat to humans of all shark species. They can be found in the Indian Ocean, from India to the Philippines #5 Fattail Scorpion One of the deadliest species of scorpion, this arachnid can be found in India … as well as ranging through arid regions of the Middle East and Africa. Although they are a moderately sized 4 inches long, they have a lethal sting. Administered by the fat tail for which it is named, the scorpion’s venom contains potent neurotoxins which are especially fast acting. Death caused by respiratory paralysis can occur within hours. While an effective antivenom has been developed, several human fatalities are still reported every year. #4 Saltwater Crocodile Chances are, you’re quicker to identify the salties with Australia … but the scary reptiles make their presence known throughout most of Southeast Asia as well. As you might know, this is the world’s largest extant reptile as well as the largest riparian (rie-PARE-ee-un) predator on the planet. Growing more than 20 feet long and weighing more than 2,500 pounds they can take down almost any critter that invades its territory, including sharks. That size and aggression serves to make the salties (along with the Nile crocodile), the crocodilians (kroka-dill-ee-uns) that pose the most danger to humans. #3 King Cobra Here’s one of those fearsome animals that everyone recognizes. Ranging from India and throughout Southeast Asia, larger specimens have measured over 19 feet long, giving it the title of the longest venomous snake in the world. After biting their prey, the snakes will swallow it whole, thanks to the reptile’s pliable jaws. When confronted, the cobra will bare its fangs and create a hissing noise. Thanks to its length, the animal can strike from a long distance … and can deliver several bites during a strike. It venom contains a toxin that disrupts the central nervous system and result in paralysis … or in extreme cases, coma and death. #2 Common Krait Found in the jungles of the subcontinent, it’s infamous for inflicting the greatest number of snake bites on humans in India. Those encounters are most likely to occur at night, since the reptiles are nocturnal. The venom contains a powerful neurotoxin that can result in respiratory failure (or suffocation). If left untreated, the victim could die within 5 hours. #1 Asian Giant Hornet Identified as the largest hornet in the world, this insect has a wingspan of about 3 inches, and is about the size of an adult thumb. It’s stinger measures about a quarter of an inch, and injects a nasty, powerful venom. It contains a chemical cocktail that can cause severe pain, multiple organ failure and skin hemorrhaging. If you’re allergic to the venom, the risk of fatality increases greatly. In 2013, these insects killed more than 40 people and injured more than 1,600 people in Shaanxi (SHON-shee), China.
